🎄☃Some people have Charles Dickens stories, others have the Grinch. Sumo fans have Ryuo & Hakuho BFF origin story for Christmas🎄☃😎Happy Holidays everyone! ❄❄ Will you be my Ryuo to my Hakuho? Pretty please?? -> www.patreon.com/sumostewYT
Fascinating video. In another interview I saw, Hakuho said he would cry constantly when he first arrived. I have to imagine that having a fellow compatriot and friend was practically vital to him at the time. As you mentioned, it's easy to see why Hakuho still values his friendship so highly to this day.
This is a truly fantastic story. It goes to show that having a friend, someone that listens to you, someone that's there by you - it can make the world of difference. I couldn't imagine the pressure they'd have from being foreigners in sumo. It's beautiful that they were able to form an everlasting friendship and bond, supporting each other as fellow Mongolians - spurring each other on, elevating the goals and dreams they have further. When Ryūōs face lit up when he was talking about Hakuhō, you can just feel the love and admiration he has for his best friend. Thank you for another phenomenally put together video, Ter!
I love the footage of Hakuho and Ryuo's training, specifically the little bit of extra sauce Hakuho gives Ryuo at 8:44. Any competitive combat athlete will say that the most intense and brutal sparring sessions take place between close friends, and in that short 10 second clip, you can see just how much Hakuho respects Ryuo. Thank you for your clear effort and attention to detail - the english speaking sumo audience is small but passionate, and hopefully your videos can continue to bring others into the fold.
I am speechless. I can't believe the insane coincidence that led you to get that story. You gave us a glimpse of "the inside" of Hakuho's world. I learned. I also love the way you are telling it. I teared up for crying out loud. Thank you
"Vlogs about moving to Japan"?? Wow! I hope it's a wonderful experience for you! This is beautiful. Thank you for showing us this side of sumo. I feel that the importance of male friendship is downplayed in many cultures, and it's so refreshing to see two close friends sticking together through the years. It reminds me of the song "Let's Go" by Emigrate.
Combat sports are so intimate and personal between sparring mates, doing so in a 24 7 stable in a foreign country where you donr speak the language is that experience to the extreme. Taking a magnifying glass to a story like this speaks volumes to the humanity of the sport (or any combat sport) that I don't think is talked about enough. Thank you for putting the time and care into this video, it really shows!
There are stories about Mongolian wrestlers of Oshima and Takasago beyas too. Asasekiryu almost went head to head against Asashoryu for yusho in haru basho 2004, even though they were stablemates, also as best friends. He was right there when the first Mongolian yokozuna, the beast was born. As a fellow Mongolian I believe he saved Asashoryu many times from get into trouble (drunkenness, bad behavior etc) till the Yokozuna was forced to retire.
As a Sumostew subscriber from (almost) the beginning, it is such a pleasure to watch these video and see how much this channel has grown but yet still keeps that "personal touch" that SO MANY other videos lack. In the case of this channel, you can see and feel the journey as if you are right next to her (in fact, I believe the camera shots are literally filmed that way) This is not a "I'm smarter than you and spend money on me" channel like others I've seen there is a GENUINE feeling to everyone of your videos (Yes, I remember the Ura video that broke the replay button pewww!) If you ever visit Hawaii let me know, I'd be happy to take you to lunch in gratitude and thanks :)
What a beautiful story! Now I’m feeling a bit emotional. 😊 SumoStew, fortune favors the bold, and you put yourself in position to grab this wonderful interview.. so here’s wishing you future luck and courage in your endeavors. Hakuho is out there. Now that you’re fueled by chankonabe… go get him! 🙏
Maybe quite literally the world's biggest bromance. Thank you for these videos! I only recently got into sumo, and your videos definitely helped me to understand and appreciate the sport :)
That was a brilliant and heartwarming video. Hakuho and Ryuo truly have a terrific and nice friendship. Truly the best friendship of all time and the best friendship in sumo history and their matches with each other are very interesting and great to watch. They are great best friends. Once again, this vid was fantastic, one of the best I ever seen and thank you SumoStew for this amazing video
Wow thank you so much for this amazing insight into this incredible friendship! Hakuho is the goat, there's no denying it. But it's not like he was able to do it on his own! Having a good friend alongside you for a journey such as this must be a blessing.
If you are ever in the mood to do another story about a non-sanyaku sumo wrestler, please do one about Kyokutenho (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyokutenh%C5%8D_Masaru). He a peer of Kyokushuzan, who you briefly mentioned here, and stayed a forever-Maegeshira, until he won a championship at age of 37 in 2012. Out of all Mongolian sumo wrestlers, he is perhaps the nicest and the most humble one.
Your story is as great as the real-life characters you are depicting! I think the surprise story from chanko reviewer to a modern sumo-defining piece is priceless. Thnank you for your efforts and good work. 🙇
Thank you for this story, you have caught and showed the beautiful spirit that rest in mongolians’ heart- and were able to demonstrate wonderful and sentimental human story! Excellent!!!!
Such a beautiful story, I'm really glad that you could share all this with us. Thanks a lot for what you do for the Sumo. By far, your videos, are my favorites whenever you show us your passion for the sport. Thanks and have great health.
Appreciate the awesome content, thank you!. By the way, for those who might not recognize, at 18:01 in the video, on the left-hand side (behind the person wearing a red cap with sunglasses), you can spot Hakuho's father, a celebrated Mongolian wrestling champion widely revered in Mongolia. In the middle stands a woman whom I'm not familiar with. On the right-hand side is Hakuho's mother.
You have very high quality content. Always entertaining and insightful. The professional-grade production quality is a wonderful cherry on top. Thank you very much.
This is really one of the most interesting sumo stories that has ever come about. It really felt like you uncovered something that no one knew about. The story was so impactful seeing how deep their friendship is from the moment they started to now when they have both retired. Great work on the video! Excited for the new content that you'll be having!
Honestly it's stories like this and the human side of sumo that have me fascinated and enraptured with the sport. Good friendships that stand the test of time are to be cherished. What luck how this all played out! Thanks for sharing with us what he shared with you!
I'd watch this interview video even if it were 3 hours long! Great video! By the way, in a mongolian channel's multi-seried interview Hakuho talked about his match against Ryuo, the match you showed at the end. He said it was a very emotional one for him and that he didn't slam him to the ground as hard because he didn't want to hurt his friend.
WOW Ter, so glad to see you continuing your videos! This one is a masterpiece It seems your time away from youtube was well spent I hope all your dreams come true and am eagerly looking forward to seeing you again Have a blessed holiday season
Omg, thank you so much! What a beautiful surprise you gave me! I followed his ig account for quite a while too, wondering what their relationship was. This video satisfied my curiosity but also warmed my heart.
LOVED this video. Great job. Something it might be overlooked is how tactful you were with your questions keeping your attention and spotlight on Ryuo without trying to just use him for Hakuho stories. Beautiful and very respectful approach. Great video, very emotional.
Amazing stuff Sumostew, I would’ve never known about this. What a wholesome insight we got thanks to you cause you cared & dared to go there and ask this man do the interview

My favorite video of yours yet! So fun
Whie this is certainly a bigger deal than your original plan, I for one would also happily watch the "sumostew eats sumostew" video.
"Vlogs about moving to Japan"?? Wow! I hope it's a wonderful experience for you!

Beautiful! The moment when Hakuho kissed his cheek during the retirement ceremony immediately brought tears to my eyes.
What a beautiful story! Now I’m feeling a bit emotional. 😊

By the way, in a mongolian channel's multi-seried interview Hakuho talked about his match against Ryuo, the match you showed at the end. He said it was a very emotional one for him and that he didn't slam him to the ground as hard because he didn't want to hurt his friend.
